Differing with Seth

The Kiteboy has been working on other sales projects lately and hasn’t been able to give much thought to marketing issues.

With that said, something got me all fired up today.

I am usually in lock-step with marketing guru Seth Godin’s ideas, so imagine my surprise to see his recent blog post in which he wrote, “People are just begging to be told what to do. There are a lot of reasons for this, but I think the biggest one is: “If you tell me what to do, the responsibility for the outcome is yours, not mine. I’m safe.”  When asked, resist.”

My experience has been far from this opinion!  I think that people – by and large – want to do a good job and do not seek direction so that they can pass the buck if things go wrong.

I think that the majority of people seek direction because they want to do the job right the first time, and usually because they no interest in wasting their own time or their boss’ time and/or patience.

I think a concern (fear?) over disappointment is a far larger motivator than is a desire to have a back-pocket scapegoat should things go poorly.

Sorry Seth, but today I have to give you a Rant.  (Just for today, though…)
